The issue of ethics has (once again) become a hot topic of debate. We have seen it all before. Topics such as ‘work ethic’, ‘transparency’, ‘individual responsibility’ in the Dutch business community have for years been the mainstay of Coebergh. We blend our personal conviction with professional interests. Legislation and regulatory changes alone will not suffice to create an egalitarian, pure society. On the other hand, is a society without ambition and greed capable of propelling itself forward in the first place?
In addition, dynamics in the media landscape requires the media to enrich its role and corresponding moral code. Is the media an intermediary between news and society? If so, is it the proverbial glue that keeps society together? Or is it commercial enterprises, operating in a gruelling competitive environment, hungry for sales figures, which triumph over the demand for truth? As is often the case, the truth lies somewhere in between.
